Batteries

In common there are the following types acid-lead batteries:

  • Gel batteries
  • AGM batteries
  • Flooded batteries
  • OPsZ (Long life flooded tubular plate batteries)

The OPsZ batteries are the most preferable ones for Solar systems due their lifetime expectations

  • Design life: >20 years at 20ºC, >10 years at 30ºC, >5 years at 40ºC and a Float design life @ 70ºF/20ºC 20 years, example:
  • Cycle design life @ 80% discharge 1500
  • Cycle design life @ 50% discharge 2800
  • Cycle design life @ 30% discharge 5200

Under the condition that the battery is fully loaded (completed absorption charge till float) before the next discharge take’s place. Note that an absorption phase can take 2 hours per charge before the battery is going to float. During absorption batteries are loosing water as a result of producing Gas. It’s normal for a 24V-1300Ah battery to add 20 liter (5,3 gallon) water per year. Normal charge for this type of batteries is 5%-10% of the capacity, in this case max 130Amp.
